Abstract
This study aimed to improve the reading skills of third-grade students at SDN Drokilo I, Kedungadem District, Bojonegoro Regency, through the implementation of the Discovery Learning method. The background of this study was the low reading ability of students, as indicated by low average scores and learning mastery that had not yet reached the minimum mastery criterion (MMC). This research employed a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 23 third-grade students of SDN Drokilo I. Data were collected through reading skill tests, observations, and documentation, and were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative descriptive techniques. The results showed that the implementation of the Discovery Learning method significantly improved students’ reading skills. In the pre-cycle stage, the average reading score was 63.48 with a mastery level of 39%. After the implementation of actions in Cycle I, the average score increased to 72.17 with a mastery level of 65%. In Cycle II, the average reading score further increased to 82.39 with a mastery level of 91%. These results indicate that the performance indicators of the study were achieved. In addition to improving learning outcomes, the Discovery Learning method also enhanced students’ activeness, motivation, and self-confidence in reading activities.
