Abstract

ABSTRACT(English Version) This study is motivated by the low speaking skills of elementary school students, which are still influenced by conventional teaching methods and limited use of engaging learning media. This research aims to describe the implementation of the communicative approach and the use of picture media in teaching speaking to fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 2 Ngrencak, Trenggalek Regency, and to identify the obstacles encountered during its implementation. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the communicative approach supported by picture media creates a more interactive learning atmosphere, increases students’confidence in speaking, enriches vocabulary, and helps students organize ideas more coherently. Picture media function as visual stimuli that facilitate students’ understanding of speaking contexts. The obstacles include limited learning media, differences in students’ abilities, and teachers’ readiness to optimally implement the communicative approach. Therefore, the implementation of a communicative approach assisted by picture media is effective in supporting the development of elementary students’speaking skills.
