Abstract

ABSTRACT Imam Baidowi. 2025. The Implementation Of Project-Based Learning In Improving Poetry Writing Skills Of Grade Vii Students At Smp Negeri 1 Durenan, Trenggalek Regency, Thesis. Master of Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program. Graduate School of PGRI Madiun University (UNIPMA). Supervisor I: Dr. Supri Wahyudi Utomo, M.Pd., Supervisor II: Dr. Dwi Rohman Soleh, SS, M.Pd Keywords: Project Based Learning, poetry composing ability, Indonesian language learning, juniOr high school students. Poetry writing instruction in Indonesian language learning at the junior high school level aims to develop students’ language skills, creativity, and ability to express ideas and feelings. However, based on preliminary observations in grade VII of SMP Negeri 1 Durenan, Trenggalek Regency, students’ ability to compose poetry was still relatively low, particularly in the aspects of idea development, diction accuracy, use of imagery and figurative language, and the unity of meaning in poetry. In addition, the learning process tended to be conventional and teacher-centered, resulting in limited student engagement in poetry learning activities. This study aimed to describe the implementation of Project Based Learning (PjBL) in improving students’ ability to compose poetry, to identify factors influencing the success of PjBL implementation, and to describe students’ perceptions of the use of PjBL in poetry learning among grade VII students of SMP Negeri 1 Durenan, Trenggalek Regency. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the research design, conducted through the stages of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection in two cycles. The research subjects were grade VII students of SMP Negeri 1 Durenan. Data were collected through observations of learning activities, tests of students’ poetry writing ability, and documentation of students’ poetry works. Data analysis was carried out descriptively to describe the learning process and the results of the implementation of project-based learning. The results showed that the implementation of Project Based Learning was able to improve students’ ability to compose poetry, particularly in the aspects of idea development, diction accuracy, use of imagery and figurative language, as well as the unity of structure and meaning of poetry. In addition, the application of PjBL increased students’ activeness, learning motivation, and self-confidence in the poetry learning process. Therefore, Project Based Learning is effective as an alternative learning model to improve the poetry composing ability of junior high school students.
