Abstract
ABSTRACT Yeti Lestari. 2025. Improving Narrative Paragraph Writing Skills through the Use of Diaries among Sixth Grade Students at SDN 1 Badegan, Badegan District, Ponorogo Regency in the 2024/2025 Academic Year. Thesis. Indonesian Language and Literature Education Masters Study Program. PGRI Madiun University Postgraduate School (UNIPMA). Supervisor I: Dr. Dwi Setiyadi, M.M, Supervisor II: Dr. Dwi Rohman Soleh, S.S, M.Pd. Keywords: narrative writing, diary, writing skills, elementary students This study aims to improve students' narrative paragraph writing skills through the use of diaries. The research employed a classroom action research ( CAR) design conducted in three cycles. The research subjects were 29 sixth-grade students of SDN 1 Badegan, Ponorogo. Data were collected through observation, documentation, interviews, and assessment of students’ written work. The results showed that diary writing effectively improved students’ narrative writing ability. In the first cycle, students began expressing personal experiences in writing. In the second cycle, their narrative structures improved. By the third cycle, students demonstrated more expressive and coherent writing , with richer vocabulary and better storyline development. The average score increased from 59.3 (pre-cycle), to 67.2 (cycle I), 74.5 (cycle II), and 81.1 (cycle III). A total of 86% of students achieved good to excellent writing proficiency. The study concludes that diaries are an effective and meaningful medium to improve elementary students’ narrative writing skills.
