Abstract

The personal-social problems experienced by students, as identified by researchers at school, include low self-esteem. This issue is not only faced by regular students but also by students with special needs, particularly slow learners. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of group counseling using the cognitive restructuring technique to improve self-esteem among slow learner students at SMP Negeri 4 Magetan. Group counseling with cognitive restructuring focuses on efforts to change negative thinking patterns into positive ones, improve perceptions of failure, and enhance motivation through group dynamics. This study employs a quantitative approach with a one-group pre-test post-test experimental design. The population in this study consists of 7th-grade students, and the sample includes 7 students selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis for hypothesis testing was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Based on the SPSS output, the calculated Z value was -2.366 and the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.018. Since 0.018 < 0.05, this indicates a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. Thus, it can be concluded that group counseling using the cognitive restructuring technique is effective in improving the self-esteem of 7th-grade students. The results of this study indicate that group counseling with the cognitive restructuring technique is effective in enhancing the self-esteem of slow learner students at SMP Negeri 4 Magetan. Based on these findings, it is recommended that this approach be considered by students, teachers, schools, and future researchers as a reference in addressing similar issues.
