Abstract

Literacy skills play a crucial role in education; however, their development is often hindered by the use of monotonous learning methods. Therefore, this study aims to: (1) determine the effect of using the discovery learning method on the ability to understand observational report texts among students of SMP Negeri 6 Madiun; (2) describe the effect of literacy skills on the ability to understand observational report texts among students of SMP Negeri 6 Madiun; and (3) identify the interaction between the use of learning methods and literacy skills on the ability to understand observational report texts among students of SMP Negeri 6 Madiun. This research is a quantitative study employing a 2 x 2 factorial design. The data analysis techniques used include instrument validity and reliability testing, followed by a two-way ANOVA. The results of the study show that the group of students taught using the Discovery Learning method obtained an average score of 11.71. Meanwhile, in the conventional learning group, the average score for understanding observational report texts was 10.42. Based on the research results, the use of the Discovery Learning method and good literacy skills have a positive and significant effect on the ability to understand observational report texts among students of SMP Negeri 6 Kota Madiun.
