Abstract

Conversational implicature is an important concept in pragmatics that explains how speakers convey meanings beyond the literal interpretation of their utterances. In film dialogues, implied meanings play a significant role in expressing intentions, emotions, and interpersonal relationships. However, limited research has focused on dialogue-driven films in which the storyline is primarily developed through conversations between two main characters. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types of conversational implicatures and analyze their communicative functions in the movie Before We Go (2014). This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design using utterances spoken by the two main characters, Nick and Brooke, as the data. The analysis was based on Grice’s (1975) theory of conversational implicature, focusing on generalized and particularized conversational implicatures, and supported by Yule’s (1996) explanation of the communicative functions of implicature. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques by identifying and interpreting dialogues containing implied meanings. The findings are expected to reveal the occurrence of generalized and particularized conversational implicatures and explain how they function to express emotions, maintain interpersonal relationships, and convey implicit information. This study is expected to contribute to pragmatic studies on indirect communication and provide useful references for future researchers, English teachers, and students interested in pragmatics and film discourse analysis.
