Abstract

Teaching writing is essential for developing language skills and critical thinking in junior high school, particularly for mastering procedure texts, where students often struggle with text structure, vocabulary, grammar, confidence, and expressing ideas. To address these problems, effective approaches like discovery learning combined with picture series are needed. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to describe the implementation of discovery learning strategy and picture series in teaching writing procedure text to seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Takeran, while also identifying the problems and solutions. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving an English teacher and seventh-grade students. The findings revealed that combining discovery learning with picture series was executed systematically across three main learning stages. Despite encountering problems with limited vocabulary, grammatical errors, lack of confidence, and difficulties in expressing ideas in English, students were supported by the teacher through direct feedback, model texts, activation of prior vocabulary knowledge, and consistent use of innovative teaching methods. Overall, the integration of discovery learning and picture series provides a structured and effective framework to enhance students' writing skills while overcoming common learning problems in procedure text.
