Abstract

Key terms: Questioning Strategies, Teachers’ Questioning Strategies, Classroom Interaction, Vocational High School. The purpose of this study was to identify the types of questioning strategies used by an English the teacher, examine how these strategies influenced classroom interaction, and explore the teacher reasons for using particular questioning strategies. This qualitative research was conducted with the eleventh-grade students of TKJ 2 (Teknik Komputer Jaringan) at SMKN 1 Jiwan. Data collection of this research was conducted through observation, and interview the English the teacher. The researcher found that the teacher used questioning strategies by applying some type of questions strategies aligned with the classification adapted by Wangru (2016), which includes Prompting, Probing, Repeating, and Redirecting. The prompting strategy was the most dominant strategy, by giving clues, simplify the questions. The probing was used to follow-up questions to get complete answer. The repeating strategy found that the teacher translated into Bahasa Indonesia or mixed the questions, to avoid misunderstanding. Then, redirecting strategy was used by the teacher to involves other student participate and build confidence. The findings of this study show that the use of questioning strategies showed the positive effects in EFL Classroom. By applying questioning strategies, the interaction between the teacher and the students do not get stuck in confusion or silence.
