Abstract

ABSTRACT Anik Agustin. 2026. Improving Poetry Writing Skills through the Project Based Learning Model Assisted by Word Card Media for Fifth-Grade Students of SD Negeri Bangsri Plandaan, Jombang. Thesis. Madiun: Master's Program in Indonesian Language and Literature Education, Graduate School, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Advisors: ((I) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hanif, MM, M.Pd. (II) Dr. Lulus Irawati, SS, M.Pd. Keywords: Project Based Learning (PjBL), word card media, poetry writing skills, elementary school. This study aims to improve the poetry writing skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Bangsri Plandaan, Jombang through the implementation of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model assisted by word card media. The study was motivated by the students' low ability to generate ideas, select appropriate diction, develop imagination, and compose poems based on their structural elements. In addition, the learning process was still dominated by conventional teaching methods, resulting in low student participation during classroom activities. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 25 twenty-five-grade students of SD Negeri Bangsri Plandaan, Jombang. Data were collected through classroom observations, writing tests, interviews, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative techniques to determine improvements in students' learning activities and poetry writing skills after implementing the Project Based Learning model assisted by word card media. The findings indicated that the implementation of the Project Based Learning model assisted by word card media successfully improved both students' learning activities and poetry writing skills. Students' learning activity increased from 56% in the pre-cycle, to 75% in Cycle I, and reached 87% in Cycle II. Likewise, students' average poetry writing scores improved from 67.50 in the pre-cycle, to 77.34 in Cycle I, and further increased to 86.56 in Cycle II. Learning mastery also improved from 40% in the pre-cycle, to 68% in Cycle I, and reached 88% in Cycle II. Throughout the learning process, students became more actively involved in discussions, found it easier to generate ideas through the use of word cards, selected more appropriate diction, and showed greater confidence in writing and presenting their poems. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Project Based Learning model assisted by word card media is effective in improving the poetry writing skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Bangsri Plandaan, Jombang. This learning model not only enhances students' learning outcomes but also creates a more active, creative, collaborative, and meaningful learning environment.
