Abstract

This research was motivated by the low narrative writing skills and learning engagement of sixth-grade students at SD Negeri Kartoharjo 2, Magetan Regency, as indicated by an initial average score of 50.8 and a learning mastery rate of only 43.90% (below the Minimum Mastery Criterion / KKM of 65). The primary cause of this issue was teacher-centered learning and the lack of varied learning strategies and media. As an alternative solution, this study aims to improve narrative writing skills and student learning engagement through the implementation of systematic and contemporary strategies supported by picture media. The method used was qualitative Classroom Action Research (CAR) following the Kemmis and McTaggart cyclic model, which includes four stages: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research subjects consisted of the teacher and 41 sixth-grade students of SD Negeri Kartoharjo 2 (19 male and 22 female). The study was conducted in two cycles from January to June 2026. Data collection techniques included written tests (writing evaluations) and non-test methods (observation of engagement, documentation, and assessment of group writing products). Data were analyzed using quantitative percentage techniques and qualitative analysis following the Miles & Huberman interactive model. The results showed a significant improvement in writing skills, engagement, and student learning outcomes across each cycle. The average writing skill score increased from 64.39 in Cycle 1 Session 1 to 70.12 in Cycle 1 Session 2, and reached 81.82 in Cycle 2 Session 1. Classical learning mastery increased sharply from baseline data (43.90%), to 61% in Cycle 1 Session 1, 76% in Cycle 1 Session 2, reaching 95% (39 out of 41 students achieved mastery) in Cycle 2 Session 1. Student engagement also improved, reaching the "Good" category with a percentage of 79.4%. In conclusion, the implementation of systematic and contemporary strategies supported by picture media effectively enhances narrative writing skills and student learning motivation.
