Abstract
The rapid development of mass media and social media has changed the way celebrities are represented, allowing media narratives to shape public perception and social reality. One of the most prominent examples is Taylor Swift, whose public image is heavily influenced by media coverage surrounding her conflicts. This study aims to examine how Look What You Made Me Do represents media construction through visual symbols and lyrics, and how media logic shapes the social reality reflected in the music video. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with documentation as the data collection technique. Primary data consists of lyrics and eleven scenes from the Look What You Made Me Do music video, while secondary data is obtained from books, journal articles, news reports, and other relevant sources. Data are analysed using John Storey's popular culture theory and Stig Hjarvard's mediatization theory. The findings indicate that the music video functions as a form of symbolic resistance to dominant media narratives through visual symbolism, lyrical expression, and the reconstruction of controversial public events, allowing Taylor Swift to negotiate and reclaim her public identity. Furthermore, this study shows that media logic, through framing, conflict, drama, and urgency, shapes public opinion, which then constructs a social reality around Swift's reputation. This study concludes that the music video not only reflects media constructions but also reconstructs dominant meanings by repositioning Taylor Swift from an object of media representation to an active agent redefining her own public image.
