Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of poetry reading skills and learning engagement among fourth-grade students at SDN Bayemtaman. The study aimed to improve students' learning engagement and poetry reading skills through the implementation of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach with a focus on the modeling aspect. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The participants were 13 fourth-grade students of SDN Bayemtaman in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through observations and interviews and analyzed using comparative critical analysis and the interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman. The findings revealed that the implementation of the CTL approach through the modeling aspect successfully improved students' learning engagement and poetry reading skills. Improvements made during the second cycle, including the involvement of an expert poetry reader as a model and adjustments to the learning environment, increased students' participation, with 76.92% of students categorized as active or highly active. In addition, 76.92% of the students achieved good or excellent performance in poetry reading, meeting the predetermined success criteria. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach through the modeling aspect is effective in improving both learning engagement and poetry reading skills of fourth-grade students at SDN Bayemtaman.
