Abstract
This study aims to describe the stereotypes of women that underlie the designation of the character Alie as “the Other,” the process of systematic marginalization within the family, and Alie’s role in either reinforcing or challenging societal gender stereotypes in Lenn Liu’s novel A Home for Alie. The research method employed is qualitative, utilizing a feminist literary criticism approach and Simone de Beauvoir’s theory of “The Other.” The results show that Alie’s designation as “the Other” is based on negative labels such as “murderer” and “maid’s child” intended to divert attention from the collective trauma of the patriarchal family. The protagonist experiences systematic marginalization through spatial segregation at the dining table, the erasure of her social identity, and ultimately, formal expulsion. Alie’s portrayal successfully challenges traditional gender stereotypes in society through her attainment of economic autonomy and her courage to break free from oppressive domestic structures. These actions directly deconstruct the myth of the home as the safest place for women. Thus, justice for women can be achieved by breaking the cycle of violence and building self sovereignty.
