Abstract
This study aimed to describe the use of picture storybooks, improve reading literacy skills, and enhance the reading interest of third-grade students at SD Negeri Wates 1 Panekan District. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using quantitative and qualitative descriptive approaches conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 25 third-grade students consisting of 14 boys and 11 girls. Data were collected through tests, observations, and documentation. Quantitative descriptive analysis was used to determine the improvement in students’ reading literacy scores, while qualitative descriptive analysis was used to describe the learning process and observation results. The results showed that the use of picture storybooks improved students’ reading literacy skills and reading interest. The average score of students’ reading literacy skills increased from 68.28 in the pre-cycle to 77.56 in Cycle I and improved further to 85.52 in Cycle II. Students’ learning mastery also increased in each cycle. In addition, students’ reading interest improved from the low category in the pre-cycle to the good category in Cycle I and the very good category in Cycle II. The use of picture storybooks created a more engaging learning atmosphere, increased student participation, and helped students understand reading texts more easily. Therefore, the use of picture storybooks can improve the reading literacy skills and reading interest of third-grade students at SD Negeri Wates 1 Panekan District.
