Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ learning achievement and reading interest through the implementation of the Discovery Learning method based on legend stories for third-grade students at SD Islam Nabawi Kedungadem Bojonegoro. The study was motivated by the low level of students’ reading achievement and reading interest, which were caused by teacher-centered learning and limited student involvement in the learning process. This research employed a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 23 third-grade students of SD Islam Nabawi Kedungadem Bojonegoro. Data were collected through learning achievement tests, reading interest questionnaires, observations, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results showed that the implementation of the Discovery Learning method based on legend stories significantly improved students’ learning achievement and reading interest. The average learning achievement score increased from 68.50 in the pre-cycle to 74.20 in Cycle I and further increased to 82.10 in Cycle II. Classical learning mastery also improved and exceeded the predetermined performance indicators. In addition, students’ reading interest increased, as indicated by the growing number of students in the high reading interest category and the decreasing number of students in the low reading interest category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Discovery Learning method based on legend stories is effective in improving learning achievement and reading interest of third-grade elementary school students.
