Indonesian Master of Language and Literature Education Study Program, Post Graduate Program Universitas PGRI Madiun. Pembimbing (I) Dr. Panji Kuncoro Hadi, S.S., M.Pd.; (II) Dr. Suhartini, M.Pd. Keywords: surrounding environment, writing skills, writing instruction. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of utilizing the surrounding environment in improving the writing skills of third-grade students at SDN Widodaren 3 Ngawi. The background of this research is the low level of students’ writing skills, which is characterized by limited ideas, lack of vocabulary variety, and difficulties in composing simple and coherent sentences. Writing instruction that relies heavily on textbooks provides limited real-life experiences, which are essential to stimulate students’ creativity and writing ability. Therefore, the surrounding environment was used as a contextual learning resource to help students express their ideas more concretely. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were third-grade students of SDN Widodaren 3 Ngawi. Data collection techniques included observation of learning activities, writing skill tests, and documentation. Data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods supported by quantitative data to identify improvements in students’ writing skills. The results indicate that the use of the surrounding environment is effective in improving students’ writing skills. Improvements were observed in students’ ability to generate ideas, enrich vocabulary, organize sentences coherently, and produce clearer and more meaningful written texts. In addition, students’ participation and enthusiasm in the learning process also increased. Therefore, the surrounding environment can be used as an effective and contextual learning resource in teaching writing to third-grade elementary school students.
