Abstract
This research aims to describe the implementation of a multisensory approach and to determine the improvement of reading skills of third-grade students at SDN Keraskulon 2, Gerih District, Ngawi Regency through a multisensory approach. The background of this study is based on the low reading ability of students, which is indicated by difficulties in letter recognition, syllable blending, and comprehension of simple texts. The multisensory approach was selected because it involves various senses, namely visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile, which are expected to enhance students’ engagement and understanding in reading practice. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were third-grade students of SDN Keraskulon 2. Data were collected through classroom observation, reading skill tests, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive qualitative methods supported by quantitative data to identify improvements in students’ reading abilities. The results show that the implementation of the multisensory approach effectively improves students’ reading skills. This improvement is reflected in increased student participation, better letter and syllable recognition, improved reading fluency, and enhanced reading comprehension. Therefore, the multisensory approach is effective for reading practice in third-grade elementary school students and can be considered an alternative strategy for early reading instruction.
