Abstract
ABSTRACT Wiene Faradilla Dewanti. 2025. The Screen Adaptation of the Novel Dilan (Dia adalah Dilanku Tahun 1990) by Pidi Baiq into the Film Dilan 1990 Directed by Fajar Bustomi (A Screen Adaptation Study). Thesis. Madiun: Master’s Program of Indonesian Language and Literature Education, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Supervisor (I) Dr. Dwi Setyadi, M.M., (II) Dr. Agung Nasrulloh Saputro, M.Pd. Keywords: Screen adaptation, Novel, Film. A literary work that is adapted from a novel into a film is referred to as screen adaptation. Screen adaptation is conducted to reach a wider audience through visual media. This study aims to (1) describe and explain the forms of screen adaptation in terms of reduction in the novel Dilan (Dia adalah Dilanku Tahun 1990) by Pidi Baiq into the film Dilan 1990 directed by Fajar Bustomi; (2) describe and explain the forms of screen adaptation in terms of addition in the novel Dilan (Dia adalah Dilanku Tahun 1990) by Pidi Baiq into the film Dilan 1990 directed by Fajar Bustomi; and (3) describe and explain the forms of screen adaptation in terms of varied transformation in the novel Dilan (Dia adalah Dilanku Tahun 1990) by Pidi Baiq into the film Dilan 1990 directed by Fajar Bustomi. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data collection technique employs a non-interactive strategy in the form of document or archival analysis. The data analysis technique used is content analysis. The results of the study indicate that (1) the forms of screen adaptation in terms of reduction include the elimination or simplification of dialogue, the reduction of the main character’s inner narration, the omission of supporting settings or events, and the reduction of certain chronological sequences or plot elements; (2) the forms of screen adaptation in terms of addition include the inclusion of new scenes or visualizations, the addition of dialogues not found in the novel, and the addition of specific settings or locations; and (3) the forms of screen adaptation in terms of varied transformation include changes in the sequence of events (plot), the transformation of linguistic style into visual representation, and the reinterpretation or alteration of the meaning of certain scene.
