Abstract

Early reading skills are fundamental abilities that are essential for lower-grade elementary school students, as they form the foundation for successful learning in other subjects. However, preliminary observations in Grade I of SD Negeri 1 Selorejo, Bagor District, Nganjuk Regency indicated that students’ early reading skills were still relatively low. This condition was characterized by several students who had difficulty recognizing letters, read syllables haltingly, and were not yet able to read simple words and sentences fluently. Conventional teaching methods and the limited use of engaging instructional media were identified as contributing factors to this problem. Therefore, this study aimed to improve the early reading skills of first-grade students through the use of animated media. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches using a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The research subjects were nine first-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Selorejo. Data collection techniques included observation, early reading skills tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis by comparing the results of the pre-cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The results showed that the use of animated media effectively improved students’ early reading skills. Learning mastery increased from 56% in the pre-cycle to 67% in Cycle I, and further increased to 89% in Cycle II. In addition, students’ learning activities, motivation, and self-confidence in reading also showed noticeable improvement. Thus, the implementation of animated media was proven to be effective in enhancing early reading skills among first-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Selorejo, Bagor District, Nganjuk Regency.
