Abstract
This research is based on the low initial reading skills of students in early elementary school grades. This is due to differences in learning preparation between each child. In addition, there are also environmental factors and the influence of children's comprehension on basic reading skills that are still low. Another underlying factor is the teacher's teaching practices that are less interesting in fostering children's reading interest. The researcher will conduct research on the teaching activities of teachers and students in reading learning activities in early grades, so that the researcher will know what obstacles and solutions can be provided to improve the quality of learning, especially improving students' initial reading skills. Thus, this research was conducted with the aim of improving students' initial reading skills through the implementation of Deep Learning assisted by picture storybooks. This study used a classroom action research method. The subjects of this study were 17 first-grade of the SD Negeri Kacangan, Berbek Subs district Nganjuk Region. The instruments used were observation sheets and test sheets, while data collection techniques used observation and test techniques. This research was conducted for two cycles. The teacher activity data obtained in the first cycle was 75% and in the second cycle was 87.5%. Student activity obtained in cycle I was 70.83% and cycle II was 83.33%. Meanwhile, the results of the students' initial reading skills test obtained in cycle I were 70.58% and cycle II were 82.35%. From these data, it can be concluded that Deep Learning assisted by picture storybooks can improve students' initial reading skills and can be used as an alternative learning innovation in Indonesian language lessons. This is proven in each research cycle which always obtains increasing results.
