Abstract

This study aims to improve elementary school students’ reading skills through the implementation of the KWL (Know–Want to Know–Learn) method by utilizing storybooks. Reading skills remain a fundamental issue in Indonesian language learning at the elementary school level, particularly in enhancing students’ reading comprehension and learning engagement. This study employed a classroom action research approach conducted in two cycles involving fourth-grade students of SD Negeri Tambakmerak III. Data collection techniques included reading skills tests, observation sheets, and documentation. The results indicate a significant improvement in students’ reading skills, learning engagement, and comprehension after the implementation of the KWL method. The stages of the KWL method effectively activate students’ prior knowledge, stimulate curiosity, and assist students in reflecting on new information obtained from reading materials. In conclusion, the KWL method implemented through storybooks is effective in improving elementary school students’ reading skills.
