Abstract

This research investigates compliment responses (CR) used by Indonesian and Filipino ELT students. The data were collected through the use of written discourse completion tasks (DCT), with four situational settings (appearance, possession, ability, and character). A total of 40 university-student from Indonesia and Philippines participated in this study. The findings reveal that both groups predominantly used the Acceptance strategy at the macro level and Appreciation Token at the micro level. Social variables such as power and distance status significantly influenced response patterns. Interestingly, responses of the both groups participants resembled those of native speakers, indicating developing pragmatic competence and sociocultural awareness in target language use. The results of this research contribute to the field of ILP by providing insights into how learners in EFL and ESL contexts demonstrate their pragmatic competence through compliment responses to align with the sociopragmatic norms of the target language, English. Future researchers are advised to involve participants from more diverse cultural and institutional backgrounds and integrate cultural theories to explain strategy choices more deeply. Exploring other sociolinguistic variables (e.g., gender, age), and using interviews or role-plays can help generate more contextual data of real-world interactions.
