Abstract

Speaking is a productive language skill that enables individuals to express ideas, thoughts, and feelings orally in real-life communication. This study aimed to investigate the effect of using the TikTok application as a digital learning medium to improve speaking skills among eighth-grade students at SMPN 8 Madiun in the 2024/2025 academic year. A quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two groups: class VIII B (experimental group, 27 students) using TikTok-based instruction, and class VIII F (control group, 27 students) using conventional teaching. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests using oral speaking assessments aligned with the school curriculum. During the learning process, students prepared and recorded spoken content related to narrative texts. The results showed an increase in the experimental group’s post-test score (65.556) compared to the control group (57.407). Statistical analysis confirmed that the data were homogeneous and normally distributed. The hypothesis test showed a significance value of 0.003, lower than the alpha level of 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the two groups. Students in the experimental group demonstrated improvement in pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and confidence. It was concluded that TikTok was an effective and engaging medium for enhancing speaking performance in a digital learning environment.
