Abstract
Cognitive abilities are crucial for student achievement, as most learning activities involve remembering and thinking, including mathematical reasoning. Observations show that fourth-grade students' cognitive abilities are still low. This is due to moderate learning motivation and a lack of understanding of the material. During the learning process, teachers often explain directly by writing on the board and providing problems. They discuss the problems briefly, resulting in students' lack of understanding of the material and a poor grasp of the concepts. This study aims to determine the effect of the Open-Ended learning model, supported by Smarttoon, on students' cognitive abilities in mathematics, based on the motivation of fourth-grade elementary school students. This study used a quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experimental Posttest Only Control Group Design. The subjects were students of SDN Ngadirejo 02, with class IV A as the control class and class IV B as the experimental class. The sample size for this study was 37 students: 20 students from class IV A and 17 students from class IV B. The sampling technique used was saturated sampling. The research instruments used were test sheets (posttests), documentation, questionnaires, and teaching modules. Data analysis used instrument testing, prerequisite testing, and hypothesis testing. The prerequisite tests consisted of normality tests, homogeneity tests, and balance tests. Hypothesis testing used a two-way ANOVA. The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference in cognitive abilities between students who used the Open Ended learning model assisted by Smarttoon Media and the learning model using the lecture method. Based on the posttest results, the average of the experimental class was 82.65 and the control class was 65.50. Hypothesis testing was carried out using Two Way ANOVA, with a significance level of 0.004 <0.05, so there was a difference in cognitive abilities between students who learned with the Open Ended model assisted by Smarttoon Media and the lecture method. A significance level of 0.000 <0.05, so there was a difference between students who had high, medium, and low learning motivation. Significant 0.196 > 0.05 so it can be concluded that there was no interaction between the Open Ended learning model assisted by Smarttoon Media and learning motivation on mathematical cognitive abilities.
