Abstract

ABSTRACT Fitriya Mardhiyana. 2025. Development of Digital Smartcard Media Based on Phonics Method for Teaching Reading to First Grade Students at SDN Gunungsari. Undergraduate Thesis. Elementary School Teacher Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Advisors: (I) Dr. Cerianing Putri Pratiwi, M.Pd. (II) Apri Kartikasari H.S., M.Pd. This study was conducted to develop digital smartcard learning media based on the phonics method for teaching reading to first-grade students at SDN Gunungsari. The background of this research is the lack of appropriate learning media used in reading instruction and the fact that some students still experience difficulties in reading, thus requiring suitable instructional media. This research is a type of Research and Development (R&D) using the ADDIE model, which includes: Analysis analyzing the needs for reading learning media; Design designing media according to the identified needs; Development developing the designed media and assessing its feasibility through expert validation; Implementation implementing the validated media with students; and Evaluation assessing whether the developed media is appropriate for reading instruction. Before being tested, the developed media was validated by media and content experts. The validation results indicated that the media was valid for trial implementation. The results of the study show that the smartcard media is feasible for reading instruction, as seen from teacher and student response questionnaires. The media increased student enthusiasm during lessons and helped students who were still struggling with reading. The conclusion of the study states that digital smartcard media based on the phonics method is appropriate for the conditions and needs of reading instructional media. The digital smartcard media aligns with current instructional needs because previously used media were limited to concrete objects and YouTube videos. Furthermore, the digital smartcard fulfills the need for accessible, effective digital media for teaching reading in schools. Keywords: Digital Smartcard Media, Phonics Method, Reading Instruction
