Abstract
Winarti. 2026. “Improving the Ability to Recognize Number Symbols Using Natural Materials as Learning Media for Children Aged 4–5 Years at KB Bunda Pleset.” Undergraduate Thesis. Early Childhood Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Advisors: (I) Dr. Fida Chasanatun, M.Pd. (II) Shofiah Nur Afifah, M.Pd. This study aims to determine the improvement in children's ability to recognize number symbols through the use of natural materials as learning media among children aged 4–5 years at KB Bunda Pleset, Pangkur, Ngawi, and to identify the advantages and disadvantages of using natural materials to improve this ability. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), in which the researcher also acted as the classroom teacher. The study consisted of two cycles, with each cycle comprising three meetings. The research subjects were 18 children in Group A at KB Bunda Pleset, consisting of 14 boys and 4 girls. Data were collected through observation and documentation. The research instrument was an observation checklist. The data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative descriptive techniques. The success criterion was that at least 75% of the children demonstrated improvement in their ability to recognize number symbols. The results showed an improvement in children's ability to recognize number symbols after learning activities using natural materials, such as small stones, seeds, and dried leaves. The pre-action observations indicated that no children were categorized as being in the “Very Well Developed” category, with a percentage score of 81–100%. Following the implementation of Cycle II, the percentage of children categorized as “Very Well Developed” in recognizing number symbols increased to 84.3%. The steps taken to improve children's ability to recognize number symbols included preparing natural materials as learning media and demonstrating how to identify number symbols from 1 to 10, imitate number symbols from 1 to 10, and associate number symbols from 1 to 10 with objects made from natural materials. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of natural materials as learning media can improve the ability to recognize number symbols among children aged 4–5 years in Group A at KB Bunda Pleset, Pangkur, Ngawi.
