Abstract

This research was motivated by the importance of literary psychology studies in understanding the psychological dynamics of characters in literary works, as literary learning still tends to focus on intrinsic elements and has not examined the psychological aspects of characters in depth. One literary work that is interesting to study is the novel Last Minute in Sangatta by Yumna Malik, which depicts the struggle of the character Alenna in fulfilling various needs in life. This research aims to describe the fulfillment of Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs in the character Alenna and to describe the relevance of the analysis results to Indonesian literature learning. This research used a literary psychology approach with a descriptive qualitative research design. The data source was the novel Last Minute in Sangatta by Yumna Malik, published in 2017. The research data consisted of dialogue, narrative, monologue, and events indicating the fulfillment of Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs in the character Alenna. Data were collected through documentation using reading and note-taking techniques, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the character Alenna experienced the fulfillment of five levels of Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, namely physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs, although some needs were not optimally fulfilled due to work pressure, social conflicts, and psychological conditions she faced. The results also showed that the analysis of Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs is relevant as an alternative material for Indonesian literature learning because it can help students understand the psychological aspects of characters, improve critical thinking skills, and strengthen appreciation of literary works.
