Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of literary works as a medium for reflecting the social and economic structures of society, particularly rural communities. Mahfud Ikhwan's novel "Bek" was chosen because it realistically represents village life through depictions of social relations, stratification, migration, and vulnerable economic conditions. This study aims to describe the depiction of the social structure and economic conditions of rural communities in the novel, based on Emile Durkheim's perspective. The method used was descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques consisting of literature review, which involved reading, recording, and classifying quotations of words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs in the novel related to the social and economic realities of rural communities. The data were analyzed using Soerjono Soekanto's theory of social structure and Emile Durkheim's theory of social solidarity, namely mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity. The results show that the social structure of the Lerok community is characterized by layered stratification between status based on lineage and status based on industrial position, changes in family roles due to mass migration, and social and religious norms that serve as a glue amidst the pressures of modernization, a manifestation of mechanical solidarity. From an economic perspective, the organic solidarity perspective reveals an increasingly complex division of labor, interdependence between individuals in their livelihoods, and shifts in traditional economic relations due to the penetration of market logic and modernization. This study concludes that both research questions are comprehensively addressed through the integration of Durkheim's theoretical framework of social structure and social solidarity, demonstrating that Bek's novel presents more than just a fictional story but also contains a social critique of social inequality and the economic vulnerability of rural communities.
