Abstract

Over the last twenty years, there have been changes in the way we understand gender, especially within the feminist movement. The main focus on this problem initially lay on individual women's problems. However, now we are paying more attention to how our systems and culture influence gender roles. Gender stereotypes are often related to giving power and control to one gender, while the other is considered weaker or less capable. The characteristics inherent in men and women as a result of gender stereotypes are widely depicted in literary works. Literary works themselves are not born from a vacuum, meaning that literary works are born through social reality in society's culture. One of the literary works that is full of stereotypes towards women is the novel Adam Hawa by Muhidin M. Dahlan. The stereotype of women as angels and monsters are two extreme images that are often found in culture and literature. Women who are considered angels are often depicted as perfect, gentle, and loving. Dahlan chose to write the story of Adam Hawa with contrasting characters such as Maia and his second wife to explore the various dimensions and complexity of gender roles in society. By presenting the rebellious, intelligent, and rude character of Maia, and his second wife who fulfills more traditional gender stereotypes, Dahlan seeks to highlight the variations in the experiences and personalities of women in society.
