Abstract
This study aims to determine metacognition in solving HOTS mathematical problems which are very important for students' success in solving problems reviewed from their initial mathematical abilities. Through a qualitative descriptive approach involving 3 students as research subjects selected based on high, medium, and low initial mathematical abilities. Determination of subjects using a purposive sample technique, namely 3 subjects were taken where 1 subject with high initial mathematical abilities, 1 subject with medium initial mathematical abilities, and 1 subject with low initial mathematical abilities. The metacognitive abilities studied were in the activities of planning, monitoring, and activating in solving HOTS problems. This study was conducted on grade X students of SMK Negeri 2 JIWAN. The instruments used in this study were test questions and interview guidelines. The results of the study showed: a) students with high initial mathematical abilities showed good metacognitive abilities in solving HOTS problems in planning, monitoring, and listening activities. b) students with medium initial mathematical abilities have a good basic understanding of metacognition in planning activities. However, it is necessary to improve metacognitive abilities in monitoring and rotating when solving HOTS problems. c) students with low initial mathematical abilities show limitations and are less than optimal in utilizing metacognitive abilities in planning, monitoring, and teaching activities.
