Abstract

The right learning method must be applied by the teacher to improve students' reading comprehension. "The Power of Two" method is one of the appropriate methods to improve students' reading comprehension. The purpose of this study is to describe the use of "The Power of Two" method and to find out the advantages and disadvantages of this method. This study used qualitative research with descriptive qualitative research method. The population in this study was 25 students. The sample of this study was 12 students who were taken from 6 groups in learning to read with the power of two method. In this study, the researcher used observation checklist, interview, and documentation. The researcher used triangulation technique to analyze the data. The results showed that there are several steps in using "the power of two" method to learn reading expository text in class X/A of SMAN 1 Jiwan in the 2024-2025 academic year, among others; 1) The teacher provides the reading text and questions. 2) The teacher asks students to answer the questions individually. 3) The teacher instructs the students to form groups in pairs. 4) Students are free to choose a partner to group with. 5) Students discuss the results of their individual work, and compile the most correct answers. 6) The teacher instructs students to present the results of their group work. This research also found the advantages including; 1) Students are not dependent on the teacher; 2) Students can develop the ability to express ideas; 3) Students can work together and can exchange ideas with other groups; 4) Students come more responsible; 5) Can increase motivation and stimulation to think; 6) Students become faster in doing tasks or understanding long texts. Disadvantages of using this method there are; 1) Differences of opinion between students which cause students to not focus on discussion; 2) It takes a long time to use this method; 3) Students who are less responsible only depend on their partners; 4) Students will find it more difficult to focus on the topic of discussion.
