Keywords: writing, explanatory text, and contextual taching and learning This research aims to describe and explain (1) improving learning to write explanatory texts using the CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning) approach for class VI students at SDN 4 Wagirkidul, Pulung District, Ponorogo Regency, (2) improving student learning outcomes in learning to write explanatory texts using CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning) approach for class VI students at SDN 4 Wagirkidul, Pulung District, Ponorogo Regency. This research is classroom action research using two cycles. The results of this research are (1) the implementation of learning to write explanatory texts using the CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning) approach for class VI students at SDN 4 Wagirkidul, Pulung District, Ponorogo Regency, teachers learning to write explanatory texts using or applying the CTL (contextual teaching and learning) approach. In writing explanatory texts, the teacher provides opportunities for students to describe for themselves natural phenomena and social phenomena that occur in the surrounding environment. The teacher only acts as a facilitator and the rest of the students play a more active role in the teaching and learning process, (2) Student learning outcomes in the implementation of learning to write explanatory texts using the CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning) approach for class VI students at SDN 4 Wagirkidul, Pulung District, Ponorogo Regency In cycle I the average score of students in writing explanatory text was 66.16 and in cycle II it was 85. Data shows an increase from cycle I, namely 1 student who completed it with a percentage of 16.67, to 5 students with a percentage of 83.33% in the cycle II. These results show that the increase from cycle I to cycle II was 60%, so that the CTL (contextual teaching and learning) approach in writing explanations was successful because students played an active role in the teaching and learning process.
