Abstract

This study aims to apply an exploratory strategy of utilizing the environment in learning to write free poetry in class V SDN 1 Paju, Ponorogo District, Ponorogo Regency. This study was conducted because of the importance of learning to write free poetry that integrates the surrounding environment as a source of inspiration in order to improve students' creativity in creating works. The method used in this study is the classroom action research (CAR) method with a cycle design. The subjects of the study were 22 students of class V SDN 1 Paju. The research process was carried out through two cycles, where each cycle consisted of the planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The results of the study showed that the application of an exploratory strategy of utilizing the environment can improve students' ability to write free poetry. Students showed significant improvements in aspects of creativity, language use, and depth of meaning in the poems they wrote. In addition, learning by utilizing the surrounding environment also increases students' active participation and motivation in participating in learning. The increase in product results can be seen from the comparison of the average scores of students' poetry writing skills in each cycle, the average score of students in cycle I increased to 15.23 and in cycle II increased to 20.36. The increase in the final score from cycle I to cycle II was 5.13. The conclusion of this study is that the application of exploratory strategies for utilizing the environment in learning to write free poetry can improve students' creativity and writing skills.
