Keywords: reading, beginning, method, and word institution This research aims to describe and explain (1) the use of the institutional word method can improve the initial reading skills of class I students at SD Negeri 1 Wates, Jenangan District, Ponorogo Regency, and (2) the learning outcomes of class I students at SD Negeri 1 Wates, Jenangan District, Ponorogo Regency in learning to begin reading. using the institutional word method. This research is classroom action research using three cycles. The results of this research are (1) the use of the institutional word method can improve the initial reading skills of class I students at SD Negeri 1 Wates, Jenangan District, Ponorogo Regency. In cycle I, students learned to read words with the theme of me and the sub-theme of my body. In cycle II students learn to read words that have not been studied in cycle I and repeat a little reading of words that have been studied previously. Students learn to read through the institutional word method with Big Book media. In cycle III students learn to read words they have never studied before and repeat a little the words they have learned. In cycle III, students have learned to read simple sentences consisting of two to three words. (2) The institutional word method can improve initial reading skills in class I students at SD Negeri 1 Wates, Jenangan District, Ponorogo Regency. This can be seen from the test results during pre-action, cycle I, cycle II and cycle III which experienced an increase. The average score in cycle I was 70, in cycle II the average score of students increased to 78, and in cycle III the average score of students increased to 84.
