Abstract
The Indonesian textbook for the Merdeka curriculum grade VIII junior high school was published by the Ministry of Education and Research in order to support the implementation of the Merdeka curriculum. This book has a very important role in learning at State Junior High School (SMPN 4 Sawoo). Noting this, the readability level of this book should be studied so that teachers can have an idea of the readability level. A good readability level will certainly affect the success of learning. The purpose of this study is to describe the level of text readability in Indonesian Textbooks for grade VIII of Merdeka Curriculum at Junior High School 4 Sawoo. The method carried out by conducting document analysis and tes. To measure the readability level, the book was analyzed using Raygor's formula and the Cloze test. Text samples taken from each chapter of the book are analyzed with Raygor's formula and the results are distributed on a graph. From this graph, it will be seen how the readability level of the book is classified as easy, appropriate, or difficult for students. Furthermore, the samples will also be confirmed again by using the Cloze test involving grade VIII students as respondents to fill in the text samples that are clumped on every 5th word repeatedly. The percentage results of the students' cloze test will show the readability level of this book in three categories, namely independent, instructional, and frustrating/failed. The results of data analysis using the Raygor formula show that the readability level of this book is in the difficult category for grade VIII students, while based on the Cloze test it falls into the instructional category. From these results it can be concluded that the readability level of this book is in the difficult category, but it can still be read by grade VIII junior high school students with teacher assistance and guidance. Therefore, in using this book, teachers should provide assistance and plan alternatif steps by preparing alternatif texts or by improving students reading skills.
