Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are essential for solving math problems. The mathematical communication abilities of students vary. Contextual problems are those related to everyday life. Initial abilities are categorized into three levels: high, medium, and low. This study aims to describe students' mathematical communication skills in solving contextual problems related to the topic of systems of linear equations in two variables, based on the initial abilities of eighth-grade students. This research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of the study are three eighth-grade students from MTs Bodronoyo, consisting of one student with high initial ability, one with medium initial ability, and one with low initial ability. The instruments used in this study are a mathematical communication skills test consisting of 3 open-ended questions and interviews. The indicators of mathematical communication skills used in this study are: (1) The ability to connect real objects and images to mathematical ideas. (2) The ability to express everyday events in mathematical language or symbols. (3) The ability to create models of situations through writing and explain questions about mathematics that have been studied. Data analysis techniques involve data reduction, data presentation, data verification, and conclusion. The results of this study show that the level of students' mathematical communication skills in solving contextual problems related to the topic of systems of linear equations in two variables, based on their initial abilities, is as follows: students with high initial ability are able to meet all 3 indicators of mathematical communication skills, students with medium initial ability can meet 2 of the indicators, while students with low initial ability do not meet any of the indicators.
