Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essential skill in English language learning because it enables students to understand, interpret, and analyze written texts. However, many students experience difficulties in reading due to limited vocabulary, lack of motivation, and the use of conventional teaching methods. Therefore, this study investigated the implementation of Scramble Words in teaching reading comprehension to tenth-grade students of SMKN 5 Madiun. The objectives of this study were to describe the implementation of Scramble Words in teaching reading comprehension and to identify its strengths and weaknesses. This research employed a qualitative research design. The participants were tenth-grade students and an English teacher at SMKN 5 Madiun. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data triangulation was applied to ensure the validity of the findings. The findings revealed that Scramble Words were implemented through pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading activities. The technique encouraged students to rearrange scrambled words and sentences into meaningful forms, helping them focus on vocabulary, sentence structure, and contextual meaning. The students showed positive responses and higher engagement during reading lessons. The strengths of Scramble Words included increasing student participation, improving vocabulary understanding, and supporting reading comprehension. However, the technique also presented some weaknesses, particularly related to time management and students’ limited vocabulary mastery. In conclusion, Scramble Words can be effectively implemented as an interactive strategy for teaching reading comprehension. The technique promotes active learning and enhances students’ engagement in reading activities, although adequate preparation and teacher guidance are required to maximize its effectiveness.
