Keywords: reading, beginning, media, and educational cards This study aims to describe (1) the application of educational card media can improve the initial reading ability of second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Bedoho, Sooko District, Ponorogo Regency and (2) the learning outcomes of second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Bedoho, Sooko District, Ponorogo Regency in learning to read beginning using educational card media. This study is a classroom action research with two research cycles. The results of this study are (1) the application of educational card media can improve the initial reading ability of second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Bedoho, Sooko District, Ponorogo Regency. In the first cycle, the average value of students was 76.14 which, if categorized into a scale of five, is in the moderate category and the average value of the second cycle increased to 86.70 which, if categorized into a scale of five, is in the good category. This means that there is an increase in initial reading ability with the application of educational word card media in second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Bedoho, and (2) the learning outcomes of second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Bedoho, Sooko District, Ponorogo Regency in learning to read beginning using educational card media have increased. This is proven in the first cycle, there were 17 students (62%) who completed the initial reading using educational word card media in second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Bedoho and in the second cycle, there were 23 students (85%) who completed the initial reading ability with the application of educational word card media in second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Bedoho.
