Improving Free Poetry Writing Skills Through a Contextual Approach Assisted by Environmental Media for Fifth Grade Students of SD Negeri 1 Sooko, Sooko District, Ponorogo Regency. Theses. Keywords: writing, free poetry, contextual approach, and environmental media This study aims to describe and explain (1) the application of a contextual approach assisted by environmental media in learning to write free poetry for fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Sooko, Sooko District, Ponorogo Regency and (2) the activities of fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Sooko, Sooko District, Ponorogo Regency in participating in learning to write free poetry through a contextual approach assisted by environmental media. This study is a classroom action research with two research cycles. The results of this study are (1) the average value of students is 61.97 with a sufficient category. The average value after the first cycle of action is 74.08 with a sufficient category. The average value of students after the second cycle of action is 81.80 with a good category, and (2) students' activities towards natural media as a way of learning to write free poetry are very positive. Based on the results of interviews in the first cycle, on average they responded positively to the learning that has been delivered by the teacher. In addition, based on the results of observations in Cycle I, 75% of the total number of students, they paid close attention to the teacher's explanation during the learning process, even in Cycle II the number of students who liked 90%, they really liked learning with natural media around them. Likewise with student activity, in Cycle I, students who were inactive were 25%, but in Cycle II, inactive students decreased to 10% or around 4 students.
