Abstract
This study aims to improve students’ reading ability through the use of picture storybooks for fifth-grade students at SDN Panjang I, Kedungadem District, Bojonegoro Regency. This research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 21 fifth-grade students. The research instruments included reading ability tests, teacher activity observation sheets, student activity observation sheets, and documentation. The aspects of reading ability assessed in this study covered reading fluency, pronunciation accuracy, intonation, and reading comprehension. Data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ reading ability. In the pre-cycle stage, the average reading score was 63.24 with a mastery level of 38.10%. In Cycle I, the average score increased to 72.38 with a mastery level of 66.67%. Furthermore, in Cycle II, the average score rose to 82.67 with a mastery level of 90.48%. In addition to learning outcomes, students’ learning activities and participation in reading lessons also improved.
