Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Deep Learning instructional method to improve the reading skills of second-grade students at SD Negeri 2 Mrican, Jenangan District, Ponorogo Regency, and to determine the improvement in students’ reading abilities after the application of this method. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, conducted in two cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were 10 second-grade students. The implementation of the Deep Learning method included activating prior knowledge, contextual learning, collaborative learning, scaffolding, and reflection. The results indicate that the learning process became more active, participatory, and meaningful. Students demonstrated increased engagement, improved concentration, and enhanced ability to comprehend readings both literally and inferentially. Quantitatively, there was a significant improvement in students’ reading scores. The average score increased from 63 in the pre-cycle to 72 in Cycle I and 84 in Cycle II. The percentage of mastery learning also increased from 28% in the pre-cycle to 57% in Cycle I, and reached 89% in Cycle II. These findings indicate that the Deep Learning method is effective in improving the reading abilities of second-grade students. The study concludes that the Deep Learning method is capable of creating meaningful learning experiences, increasing student motivation, and significantly enhancing reading skills. The findings imply that teachers need to apply deep learning approaches in reading instruction and that schools should support strategies encouraging higher-order comprehension. Recommendations are provided for teachers, schools, future researchers, and policymakers to develop more effective reading learning through the Deep Learning approac
