Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ poetry writing skills through the implementation of the recitation technique for fifth-grade students at SDN Widodaren I, Gerih District, Ngawi Regency. The background of this study is based on the low ability of students to write poetry, as indicated by limited diction mastery, inappropriate use of figurative language, and difficulties in expressing feelings and imagination in poetic form. Therefore, a learning technique that encourages active participation, expressive confidence, and language appreciation is required. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were fifth-grade students of SDN Widodaren I. Data were collected through poetry writing tests, observation sheets of teacher and student activities, and documentation. Data were analyzed descriptively to determine the improvement in students’ poetry writing skills. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of the recitation technique improves students’ poetry writing skills. The improvement is evident in students’ diction selection, use of figurative language, theme appreciation, and confidence in expressing ideas and emotions through poetry. Therefore, the recitation technique is effective as an alternative learning strategy to enhance poetry writing skills of fifth-grade students at SDN Widodaren I, Gerih District, Ngawi Regency.
