Abstract
School literacy and instructional video media are learning strategies that play an important role in shaping the character of elementary school students, particularly independent character and language politeness. School literacy serves as a means of habituating reading, writing, and speaking activities that can foster students’ independent learning, while instructional video media help visualize polite speaking behavior in a concrete and easily understood manner for early-age learners. Based on the results of initial observations in Grade I of SD Negeri 3 Duren, it was found that some students still showed a high dependence on the teacher and were not yet consistent in using polite language in daily communication. Therefore, innovative learning strategies that are appropriate to students’ developmental characteristics are needed, namely through the implementation of school literacy integrated with instructional video media. This study aims to describe the implementation of school literacy, the use of instructional video media, and the simultaneous application of both in shaping students’ independent character in the polite speaking material. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects were first-grade students of SD Negeri 3 Duren, with the main informants being the classroom teacher, the school principal, and students’ parents. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data validity was ensured through source, technique, and time triangulation. The results show that the implementation of school literacy was able to enhance students’ independence in selecting reading materials, retelling the content of what they read, and habituating the use of polite language. The use of instructional video media helped students understand and imitate polite speaking behavior more quickly and consistently. The integration of school literacy with instructional video media was proven to have a stronger impact on the formation of students’ independent character, as indicated by increased student initiative in learning, confidence in speaking, and spontaneous use of polite expressions both at school and at home.
