Abstract
This study examines the application of magical realism elements in two novels by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, Funiculi Funicula (Kohi Ga Samenai Uchi Ni - Before The Coffee Gets Cold) dan Funiculi Funicula (Kono Uso Ga Barenai Uchi Ni - Kisah Kisah Yang Baru Terungkap). Both novels centre on a cafe in Tokyo that allows visitors to travel through time, provided they return before the coffee gets cold. The analysis uses Wendy B. Faris's theory of magical realism, which includes irreducible elements, unsettling doubt, the phenomenal world, the union of two realms, and the disruption of time, space, and identity. The results of the study show that time travel in the novels is not explained scientifically but is presented as a natural part of the story world, creating ambiguity between reality and magic. The cafe setting functions as a liminal space where the real world and the magical world blend, presenting an emotional experience filled with regret, hope, and reconciliation. A comparison between the two volumes shows a shift in focus from the revelation of the story and second chances (first volume) to the deepening of emotions, forgiveness, and acceptance (second volume). In the contemporary context, the magical realism in this work reflects the dilemmas of modern humans living between rationality and spirituality, facing issues such as loss, identity, loneliness in the digital age, and longing for meaningful connections. This work proves that magical realism is not merely an element of fantasy, but also a means of understanding the complex and paradoxical realities of modern life.
