Abstract

The Paiton Unit 1 & 2 Steam Power Plant (PLTU) is one of the providers of electricity in Indonesia. One of the vital components in the water-steam cycle is the Condensate Extraction Pump (CEP). The gland seal water system in the CEP functions to prevent leakage between the shaft and housing by maintaining water pressure. This study aims to analyze the reliability of the gland seal water pressure control system before and after it was modified into an integrated automatic system to the Distributed Control System (DCS) with the addition of a smart positioner and pressure transmitter. The research was conducted quantitatively by collecting actual pressure data for one month at one-day intervals. The variables analyzed included gland seal water pressure, DCS demand signals, and actuator feedback. Data analysis used descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, and Pearson correlations. The t-test results showed that the integrated control system was able to maintain the pressure close to the set point of 5.00 kg/cm² with a p-value of 0.01 (< 0.05), indicating a significant difference compared to the previous system. The correlation test between the demand signal and the valve control position feedback shows a very strong relationship (r = 0.999), which indicates an accurate control response. In addition, control accuracy increased by 62.8% after the DCS integrated system was implemented. This study concludes that DCS integration significantly improves the accuracy and reliability of the gland seal water control system at the CEP in Paiton Power Plant Units 1 & 2.
