Prasetyowati Aning. 2025. Improving News Writing Skills Using Photographs among VIII-1 Grade Students in Semester 1, Academic Year 2024/2025 at Smpn 1 Durenan, Trenggalek Regency. Thesis. Madiun: Master of Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Graduate Faculty, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Supervisors: (I) Dr. Dwi Rohman Soleh, M.Pd., (II) Dr. Agung Nasrullah Saputra, M.Pd. Keywords: Photographs, Writing Skills, News Text. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using photographs in improving the news writing skills of VIII-1 grade students at Smpn 1 Durenan, Trenggalek Regency. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles with 30 students as participants. The results showed that the use of photographs improved students' news writing skills, with an increase in the average score (initial average score) to (final average score). This study concludes that the use of photographs is effective in improving students' news writing skills. News writing skills in this study are defined as students' ability to write news texts that meet certain criteria, such as clear structure, accurate information, and effective use of language. These news writing skills were measured using a previously developed assessment rubric. This study implies that the use of photographs can be an effective learning strategy in improving students' news writing skills.
