Abstract
Retno Tri Wulandari.2025. Application of Role Playing and Realia Models in Reading Comprehension of Narrative Discourse in Grade 5 Students of SDN 1 Kedungbanteng, Sukorejo District, Ponorogo Regency. Thesis, Master of Indonesian Language Education Study Program, Postgraduate School, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Supervisor 1 Dr. Dwi Setiyadi, MM., Supervisor 2 Dr. Panji Kuncoro Hadi, SS, M.Pd. This study aims to describe the implementation of role playing and realia models in teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts, as well as to explain the challenges and solutions that emerged during the learning process. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design, conducted in the fifth grade of SDN 1 Kedungbanteng, Sukorejo Subdistrict, Ponorogo Regency. The subjects consisted of one teacher and fifteen fifth-grade students. The results showed that the implementation of the role playing and realia models was carried out in several stages, including reading narrative texts, using real-life objects (realia), and enacting characters from the story. The application of both models had a positive impact on students’ comprehension, particularly in identifying characters, settings, plots, and summarizing the moral messages. The obstacles found included student shyness, limited media, and time constraints. The solutions provided included gradual guidance, the use of simple media, and heterogeneous groupings. The role playing and realia models have proven effective in enhancing narrative text reading comprehension while fostering confidence, engagement, and reading interest among elementary school students. Keywords: role playing, realia, reading comprehension, narrative text, elementary school
