Abstract

Speaking skills are one of the important aspects in language learning that need to be developed from an early age. Grade 5 students at SDN 1 Tugurejo Slahung Ponorogo experience difficulties in expressing ideas and communicating effectively in learning activities. The group discussion method is viewed as a strategy that can improve students' speaking abilities through structured social interaction. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of using the group discussion method in improving the speaking skills of grade 5 students at SDN 1 Tugurejo. This study uses a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design implemented in two cycles. The research subjects were 24 grade 5 students at SDN 1 Tugurejo. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and qualitatively with source triangulation. The research results show a significant improvement in students' speaking skills after implementing the group discussion method. In cycle I, the average score of students' speaking skills was 71.8%. In cycle II, it increased to 95.8%. The improvement was evident in aspects of speaking fluency, articulation clarity, vocabulary usage, and students' confidence in expressing opinions. The group discussion method proved effective in improving the speaking skills of grade 5 students at SDN 1 Tugurejo. Factors supporting the success include the formation of heterogeneous groups, selection of interesting discussion topics, intensive teacher guidance, and a conducive learning atmosphere. This research recommends the use of group discussion methods as an alternative learning strategy to develop elementary school students' speaking skills.
