Abstract
Acne is a skin disorder caused by bacterial infection, particularly Staphylococcus aureus. The increasing resistance to conventional antibiotics has encouraged the development of natural-based formulations as alternative treatments. Elephantopus scaber L. leaves are known to contain active compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, and terpenoids, which have potential antibacterial properties. This study aimed to formulate an ethanol extract gel of E. scaber leaves at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%, and evaluate its antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 using the disk diffusion method. The gel formulations were assessed for their physical characteristics, including organoleptic properties, pH, homogeneity, viscosity, spreadability, stability, and hedonic (user preference) testing. The results showed that all gel formulations met the required physical characteristics, and the formulation containing 15% extract demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity with the largest inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, the gel of E. scaber leaf extract has potential to be developed as a natural topical antibacterial formulation.
